Mogus, short for “Monster Gurita Sigarantang” (Sigarantang Octopus Monster), is an octopus character that represents the alter ego of the artist Mulyana. Mogus appears in various colors and expressions. Handcrafted since 2008, each Mogus inhabits coral islands and embodies the artist’s creative imagination with unique charm and depth. Sigarantang is depicted as an octopus creature with spiral tentacles, diverse textures, and distinct facial expressions often adorned with multiple sets of eyes. Each version of Sigarantang varies in size, color, facial expression, and number of tentacles, reflecting the diversity and uniqueness in every piece. Mulyana uses knitting and crochet techniques to create art installations that portray a colorful and textured underwater world. Through Mogus and his modular installations, he explores themes of identity, transformation, and environmental sustainability, inviting the audience to reflect on the relationship between humans and nature.
